How do I prime the oiling system of my Gopher Engine?
The best way to prime the oiling system is by purchasing one of our engine pre-lube tanks, (part # EPL100). This pre-lube tank will prime all of the internal parts of the engine before initial start-up. If this is not an option and your engine is equipped with an oil-pump drive off the pump and connects to the bottom of the distributor or pump drive unit. If so, you can use a drill and socket that fits the pump drive to spin the oil pump and lubricate the engine. Be sure to tape the socket to your extension or it may drop into the pan.
If your engine is not equipped with a “distributor or pump drive unit”, the manufacturer suggests disabling the ignition and fuel systems and cranking the engine over until oil pressure is observed on a mechanical oil pressure gauge. Gopher Engines recommends using an engine pre-lube tank for these type applications.
When should I change my oil for the first time?
Gopher Engines recommends changing oil at 500 miles. This is also a good time to check the vehicle’s coolant level and for any external leaks.
I noticed some my oil has a metallic look to it at first oil change, is this okay?
Yes, when new parts are breaking in there will be some metal showing up in the drained oil. Most of these metal particles are form the cam/lifters breaking in to each other.
My engine is using some oil, is this normal for a newly remanufactured engine?
Gopher Engines’ has a unique honing process that allows for a minimal ring seating process. Typically, an engine will use some oil and 1 quart per 1000 miles is acceptable under normal operating conditions according to manufacture’s specifications. However, we have eliminated many oil consumption problems by simply replacing the pcv valve with an original equipment valve.
Do I have to adjust my rockers when I receive my engine?
No, the manufacturer has preset the rockers. If you have any questions about the presets, please contact us directly.
Why does my oil pressure fluctuate with engine RPM?
Keep in mind that oil pressures are directly related to engine rpm. When rpm increases, the oil pressure will coincide and likewise with engine deceleration. Expert’s state that the oil pressure read by the sending unit is the pressure left over after all internal parts have been sufficiently oiled. Built in clearances do allow oil pressure do bleed off as the oil passes through the engine oiling system. (Go Back)
